Emperor Silver demands a new wife! Being a busy sort of chap, he decides that the most efficient way of doing this is to kidnap every woman in the kingdom and then arrange some sort of marathon speed-dating session where he meets each and every one of them. While sending out his soldiers to complete this task, he understandably annoys a few of the locals and as one such perturbed citizen, you’ll start off on your epic quest to rescue the womenfolk and defeat the evil emperor. Silver was a critically acclaimed role playing game when it was released back in 1999. While it was overshadowed some by other big-name RPG releases of the time, such as Diablo 2 and Final Fantasy 8, the game enjoyed moderate commercial success and is fondly remembered by many PC and Dreamcast gamers.

Installation

The game should install on modern PCs without any major difficulties. At the end of the installation process, the installer will offer to install “DirectX Media”. You should decline this option since the version of DirectX on the CD is very much out of date.

Remember that Silver places its save game files into the same directory it is installed to, so you might want to install to an alternative path, such as C:\Games\Silver. See the troubleshooting section for more information.

Patching

Our initial attempts at getting Silver to run on our Windows 8 PC were met with disappointment. This of course led us to search for patches. There are an awful lot of patches for this game floating around the internet, from what look like official fixes to specific fixes for bugs you may encounter while playing the game. Our search took us to some of the more shady parts of the internet and its here we found a download of the game that worked absolutely perfectly on Windows 8. Inspecting the files in this download it is highly probable that this version was the one once sold by those lovely folks over at GoG.com.

We initially created a patch based on the files in this download, but since Silver is now available again at Gog.com, we’ve removed our patch. If you need a version of this game that works on modern PCs, please buy one from GoG.com.

Other fixes

We found a few other fixes lurking around the net and after virus checking them we decided to put them up here too. These fixes are for specific points in the game where you may encounter difficulties. We haven’t played the game far enough to know if they are necessary or not. Below are the files with the descriptions they came with. If the links are broken for any of these patches, let me know here.

Mansion fix – When you’ve defeated the last boss (I won’t say who) your character will remain still while the whole mansion is collapsing. This fix will allow your character to move out of the mansion before it collapses. Unzip the files then copy them into your Silver game folder under data\levels\Outro\ and overwrite all files when prompted.

Sewer fix – You will come across a room with a wooden gate and a bell right above it. For some people, the gate will not open when they shoot at the bell. This fix will solve that and allow you to open the gate by shooting the bell with any projectile weapon or magic. Unzip the files then copy them into your Silver game folder under data\levels\rain\Ray_sec\ and overwrite all files when prompted.

Final thoughts

Unusually for a PC game, there aren’t any other visual quality options to tweak, so you can simply start playing now. Unlike the Dreamcast version, Silver on the PC supports mouse and keyboard only. Combat initially feels a little clumsy compared to the Dreamcast version but we soon got used to it.

Troubleshooting

Problems saving games and configurations – Like many old titles, Silver saves its game data into the same folder as the game itself. In some instances on more modern versions of Windows, this will mean that save games cannot be written. To solve this problem you can either run the game as administrator (right click on the games icon and choose “Run as administrator”) or, better still, set the permissions on your game folder so that your user account has full control/read write permissions. You can find a tutorial on how to configure folder permissions here. The games default installation directory is “C:\Program Files (x86)\Infogrames\Silver”. The actual save game files are stored in the “SAVEGAME” sub directory. Remember the game doesn’t save your progress automatically, you must find a save point in order to save.

  1. Motyka says:

GOG removed the game along with the rest of Nordic Games titles because of disagreements over regional pricing on the site.

  2. Slirow says:

    Hi
When i launch the patch, it’s say no cd 1 found. can be because i have the french version?
    thank you.

    • BuckoA51 says:

Yes I’m afraid that’s probably the case. I can only test the installer against the version I have here.

      • Slirow says:

I don’t know what to do, i want to replay this game so hard :( Thanks for the fast reply !

        • BuckoA51 says:

Are you a programmer? I can send you the source code for the installer.

          • I_Really_Want_To_Play_Silver_Again says:

I’m getting the same problem, except I have the UK version. If this is not the version you are using, then what is? The US version?

            • BuckoA51 says:

Yes it’s a US edition. I didn’t expect it to differ that much from European editions though.

              • I_Really_Want_To_Play_Silver_Again says:

Do you have any idea where I can buy the US version? I can’t find the game on Amazon and there seems to be no way to differentiate between the versions on Ebay.

                • BuckoA51 says:

I don’t I’m afraid. The game also came out on the Dreamcast you could look for a second hand console and play it there. Sorry I realise that’s not much help! If I see a UK edition in my local charity shop I’ll pick it up and have a go see if I can write a patch/installer for it.

                • BuckoA51 says:

Patch should work on the UK version now, may work on the French version too but I can’t promise anything.

  3. Winston says:

Hey there! I really appreciate your work!
When I run Silver (after patching, of course) I get the error message “EXCEPTION: Access violation”…
I use Windows 8.1 Single Language, with an AMD A6 4400m. Any chanses I could fix the error and play Silver?

    Thanks!

  4. Aroon says:

Hello and thx for helping us replay this great game.

I m on windows 8.1 and after following every instruction, everything seemed fine till i saw the main character desynchronized with the picture. When i try to make him move, he does outside of the expected paths which makes the game unplayable…

  5. Deep thought says:

Hi i am having a problem I guess, after I put CD 1 into my computer and I try to install it gives me the setup.exe thing and after I say yes it does nothing. it doesn’t run anything else, it doesn’t give me an error or even do anything it just closes the little windows and then does nothing, so im kinda stumped on what to try next.
    I have a windows 7 computer.

  6. Tilmann says:

Hi, after patch I can’t take my game in german language :( … How can I make it german back?

  7. Demonquii says:

    Hi,
Got the error “EXCEPTION: Access violation” after patching.
I used the French originals CD on a windows 7 x64 computer

  8. Gibbs says:

Just installed the game with a french CD version on windows 10. No problems till the end of the game after patching, except maybe one or two errors like “EXCEPTION: access violation” during playing. No problem either for the saving.
Just a micro deception, I absolutly loved the Franch cast, and i didn’t find a way to play it in french, even if the English version is wonderfull too.
Thanks a lot for your work, it has been a long time i was waiting for that moment to play it again.

  9. Weslington says:

I couldn’t save, because after filling in a name pressing enter would do nothing. Luckily I found out that holding my laptop’s ‘FN’ key (function key, meant for buttons with different colored text on them, which my enter-key did not have!) and then pressing enter actually made me able to save. Yee-haw!

  10. Grandpa says:

Hello, i have a problem with the game. I own the old cds and i installed the game with them, i tried to launch the games but was not working, then i used the patch and it seems to work fine, Thank You =)
But i have a specific crahs that happens every time, when i’m in the yellow imp secret’s room and i try to open a chest there the game crashes with ”ERROR: Access violation”. So IIRC there is a good loot on that chest and i really want that loot. If i exit the room without opening the chest it works fine, but not being able to open that chest really bothers me

  11. Kelfdroid says:

Thanks for this patch, Silver now works fine on my windows 7 machine
    Kudos!

  12. Wayne says:

Hi! The link does not seem to be working anymore :(

  13. I found some interesting stuff while reverse engineer the game and created a little summary for it. https://tcrf.net/Silver_(Windows,_1999)
