It’s the distant future and once again humanity is left picking up the pieces following a global apocalypse. While the humans were busy rebuilding, a race of beast people decided that they’d had enough of the humans war-like ways and would eradicate them once and for all. Thus began the battle for Newerth (sounds like ‘New Earth’, see what they did there?). Savage is an ambitious game blending together elements of first person shooter games and real-time strategy. The game can only be played online. One player always assumes the role of commander, tasked with directing his or her army in real time. Other players would be warriors and play the game more like a first person shooter title, hopefully providing valuable assistance to the commander.

Play Savage for free

While many online-only PC games get shut down, their gameplay lost forever as the last server shuts, some get saved by the fan communities. This is exactly what has happened with Savage: The Battle for Newerth. The game was officially released for free, along with its source code, in 2006. If you do have an original copy of the game, it’s really only useful as a collectors item now. If you want to play the game, you should download Savage XR. This is the latest version of the game with various enhancements, expansions and other improvements. You can download it here. The download is around 400 megabytes, so shouldn’t take too long on a broadband connection. Once the download is complete, just choose “Open” or “Run” in your browsers download manager in order to play the game.

Notes on playing Savage

Since Savage XR is still fully supported, you can get answers to any technical support questions you may have over on the official community site here. There are one or two things new players should note however:-

Game needs administrator rights to run – We’re not sure why but every time the game is started it will ask for administrator rights. While we’re fairly confident this is due simply to bad design rather than anything malicious, it does make it harder to set the game up on a teenagers account, for instance.

Choose a username AND password the first time you play – When you first start the game, it will ask you to log in with your account name. If you don’t have an account yet, be sure to choose a username and password and make sure you remember your password. If you only enter a username, the game will accept a blank password, but of course using a blank password is not a terribly good idea. Enter a username and password before clicking “Register”.

Change screen resolution and other quality options by selecting “Options” and then “System” from the main menu – You will want to change the games default screen resolution before you start play. You can do that from the system menu. There are also several other graphical options you can configure here. If you are not sure if your computer is fast enough for the quality settings you have chosen, click on the “Benchmark” button. If the benchmark runs fast (around 60 frames per second on a standard monitor) then your PC can handle your current graphical settings.

Play the tutorial – When Savage was released, it was criticised for being difficult to learn. Savage XR now includes a tutorial level and we strongly recommend that you play through it before getting into the game proper.
