Movie tie-in games are often poor quality, rush-job affairs, but Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie (herein referred to simply as King Kong) is actually a polished and very playable effort. Blending elements of survival horror and first person shooters, you play as both Jack Driscoll as he explores the mysterious island and later in the game as King Kong as he explores (and trashes) New York.

Starforced not to play

King Kong is unplayable on Windows 8 and 10 machines. The reason for this incompatibility is sadly because the game includes one of the most notorious copy protection schemes ever inflicted on PC gamers. The Starforce copy protection uses its own low-level driver. If you do try to install and play this game, be warned that Starforce can cause system instability and other problems and is even considered a form of malware by many users. For a more detailed explanation, see this link.

Other users on the internet report being able to get the game working in Windows 7 by using a cracked executable (one with the copy protection removed or at least bypassed in some manner) and updated Starforce drivers. This will not work in Windows 8 or Windows 10 and you try it at your own risk in Windows 7.

The only possible way to get the game working again in Windows 8 or 10 would be to completely remove the copy protection. It is against site policy to link to game cracks or similar software, though we can tell you our efforts to remove the copy protection proved fruitless. It’s sad and somewhat ironic that the only people who could possibly still play this game are the people who pirated it.

I was just able to buy a non-DRM copy of this game from Gamer’s Gate last year for $10. I just checked and I do NOT have Star Force on my computer. It works well on Windows 7, but I do not have the other versions to try out. It is a great game and well worth the money. See the following link to purchase.

Seems that link is dead unfortunately, just says “This product was not available.”.

Sorry, it is still showing up on my computer. I guess since I bought it, it is still available to download for me. I did not realize they took the game down. That is a bummer for everyone else. Maybe if enough people inquire about it, they will put the game back.

You can buy it as a DRM free digital download on Amazon: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B004MPRWEG

The DRM free version from Amazon is working on Windows 10 Pro.

    My Machine:
    Dell XPS 9550
    1TB SSD
    32GB RAM
    4GB GeForce 960 GFX Card
    4K Resolution

I can run the game with an Xbox 360 Controller as the gamepad.

    PreLaunch Game Settings:
    1366×768 Display
    All Settings on High
Game did not recognize my GFX Card and went with internal Graphics instead. (That was plenty)

The signature edition works on all windows version with a patch at GitHub.com(darthmaul/Peter Jackson King Kong fix) file. Download it and…
Extract all files in the .zip file to the game folder. Replace all when prompted, double click a certain .reg file and you’re done. Easy

Wifidarthmaul/Peter Jackson’s King Kong fix file at github.com patched the strdrv’s and Peter Jackson’s King Kong signature edition works perfectly now! Even on windows 11 at 4K graphics running on a Radeon 5600xt

    • BuckoA51 says:

That’s good news if true, I’ll have to check it out. I always thought this was an interesting game and excellent for a movie tie-in.

      • Samuel chung says:

Signature edition means just that. Cd rom. I had to buy an external cd rom drive just to install the game.
Uncheck (play game) when prompt to create shortcuts when finishing the install. DO NOT LAUNCH THE GAME!
The instructions are with the zip file “wifidarthmaul/Peter Jackson signature edition fix”
When completing the .zip download, open the file, there will be an “extract all” button, press it, and windows will prompt you “destination folder”. You press browse, and you will manually locate it. Usually c: program files/Ubisoft/Peter Jackson’s King Kong signature edition
Then press ok, and windows will ask, “copy and replace?” Hit yes to all.
        Then you’re almost done.
Right click the game icon and press properties. Click on open location and there is a .reg file that you simply press it and accept “yes”to make the changes and you’ll see a confirmation like action from windows that it’s all gd.
I myself went into the game settings and set it at 4K
Double click the game icon and Kong awaits u! I couldn’t believe it. It’s like a brand new game in 4K!

Without this patch, you are at risk of Nuking your pc, have your recovery stick on standby lol. It is true, that the star force drivers that are default with the game are incompatible with windows 7 and later. If you do this patch correctly prior to the first launch of the game. It’s a mesmerizing experience to see this game play in 4K and running on latter versions of windows. I think playoldpcgames.com should change the status to playable with this patch.

There’s a version without Starforce here: (link removed, there is legally no such thing as abandonware).
